Jewelry Care
Every Sonakamal piece is made with quality metals that last for years with a little care. Here's how to keep your gold-filled and sterling silver jewelry looking its best.

Gold-Filled Jewelry
Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of real gold bonded to a base metal. It holds up much longer than gold-plated jewelry and won't flake or rub off with normal wear. With care, it can keep its shine for many years.
Everyday care
-
Put your jewelry on last, after lotion, perfume, hairspray and sunscreen have dried.
-
Take it off before swimming in the ocean or a pool, using a hot tub, showering, exercising or cleaning.
-
Wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to remove oils and sweat.
Cleaning
-
Wash gently in warm water with a drop of mild, unscented dish soap.
-
Rinse well and pat completely dry with a soft cloth.
-
Use a jewelry polishing cloth for extra shine.
-
Don't use silver dips, toothpaste, baking soda, bleach or abrasive cleaners. They can wear away the gold layer.

Sterling Silver Jewelry
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver. Tarnish (darkening) is natural: silver reacts with air, moisture and the oils on your skin. It isn't a defect, and it's easy to remove. Wearing your silver often actually helps slow tarnishing.
Everyday care
-
Avoid perfume, lotion, sunscreen, chlorine and salt water. Chlorine and sulfur can tarnish silver quickly.
-
Take your jewelry off before swimming, bathing, exercising or cleaning.
-
Wipe it with a soft cloth after each wear.
Cleaning
-
For light tarnish, buff with a silver polishing cloth.
-
For heavier tarnish, wash in warm water with mild soap, rinse, and dry thoroughly.
-
Use liquid silver dips only on plain silver. Never use them on pieces with gemstones, pearls or an intentionally darkened (oxidized) finish.
More About Keeping Jewelry
Storing Your Jewelry
-
Keep each piece in its own pouch or box so pieces don't scratch or tangle.
-
Store in a cool, dry place, not in a bathroom, where humidity speeds up tarnish.
-
Add an anti-tarnish strip or a small silica packet to your jewelry box.
-
Fasten chains before storing to prevent knots.
Island Living Tips
-
Salt water, sand and reef-safe sunscreen are all hard on fine jewelry. Leave your pieces at home for beach days.
-
If your jewelry does get wet, rinse it in fresh water and dry it completely as soon as you can.
Gemstones & Pearls
If your piece has natural stones or pearls, never soak it or use an ultrasonic cleaner. Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth and let it dry flat.
